Elevator Buffer Springs: Reliable Impact Protection for Lift Systems

Buffer springs are essential safety components installed at the bottom of an elevator shaft, designed to absorb the kinetic energy of the elevator car in the event of an overrun past the lowest landing. At Cube Elevators, we supply high-grade buffer springs engineered for maximum shock absorption and long service life across residential and commercial elevator installations.

What Is an Elevator Buffer Spring?

An elevator buffer spring is a coiled steel device mounted in the elevator pit directly below the car and counterweight. Its primary function is to safely decelerate the elevator car if it travels beyond its normal lowest stopping point due to a control system failure or overspeed condition. Buffer springs act as the final line of defence in the elevator safety chain, preventing hard impacts that could injure passengers or damage equipment.

Types and Applications

Buffer springs are typically used in low-speed and medium-speed elevators operating at speeds up to 1 m/s. For higher-speed elevators, oil buffers are recommended. Our buffer springs are manufactured from high-tensile spring steel, heat-treated for consistent performance and resistance to fatigue. They are suitable for hydraulic home lifts, small goods lifts, and residential elevators where speed requirements fall within the spring buffer range.

Compliance with Safety Standards

All Cube Elevators buffer springs comply with IS 14665 (Indian Standard for Electric Traction Lifts) and EN 81-20/50 (European elevator safety norms). Each spring is load-tested and certified to handle the maximum rated load of the elevator it is installed in. Regular inspection of buffer condition is a mandatory part of annual elevator safety audits conducted by authorised inspectors.

Durability and Maintenance

Our buffer springs are zinc-coated or powder-coated to resist corrosion in humid elevator pits. They require minimal maintenance — periodic visual inspection for signs of rust, deformation, or loss of tension is sufficient. Cube Elevators recommends buffer spring replacement every 8 to 10 years or as indicated by inspection findings, whichever comes first. We supply replacement springs for all major elevator brands across India.
